The Mattoon Fire Department is a full time career department. We maintain a 36 person roster with an Assistant Chief and Chief for a total of 38. All firefighters are certified Firefighter II by the Illinois State Fire Marshall Office and now all eligible Firefighters are certified to the FireFighter III Level by the OSFM.. We run out of three firehouses strategically placed in different tri-sectors of the city. We service a citizen population of just over 20,000 and during normal industry daytime working hours, that number can rise to nearly 50,000.

We provide fire and ems services to our community. We currently have (4) engines, (1) 100 ft aerial, (1)heavy rescue truck, and several dedicated emergency trailers for hazmat,water rescue and confined space incidents that are all frontline equipment.
